## Instapaper

Instapaper lets you save articles and share a public reading folder containing links to their original sites. It is useful for sharing a curated resource list, but its public reading-page routes are blocked in robots.txt, so do not treat it as a dependable SEO backlink.

Instapaper is a read-later service, not a business directory. A practical public-link method is to curate a reading folder, add a genuinely useful article from your site, and explicitly make that folder public. A normal private save does not create a public backlink.

### Create a public reading folder

1. [Create an Instapaper account](https://www.instapaper.com/user/register) or sign in. Registration asks for an email address and password and may require a CAPTCHA.
2. Save the article you want to include. Instapaper's [browser guide](https://www.instapaper.com/docs/save/browser) says to click **+** in the article list, paste the article URL, and click **Add**. Prefer a readable article over a generic promotional landing page.
3. Create a dedicated folder using the **...** menu beside **Folders**, then **Add Folder**. Give it a clear topic and move the saved article into it. Include other relevant reading when it makes the collection more useful; do not fill it with unrelated profile links.
4. Open **Folders**, select your folder, and choose **... → Edit Folder**. Enable **Public** and click **Save Changes**. The [official folder guide](https://www.instapaper.com/docs/organize/folders) describes this setting as making the folder visible to anyone with the link.
5. Use the public link supplied for the folder and open it in a signed-out browser. Confirm that the intended article appears and that its title or domain link opens the correct original URL. Do not share a private account or feed URL instead.

### What a public reading list looks like

This [existing public profile list](https://www.instapaper.com/p/kitchenguide) shows saved articles with external title and domain links. It demonstrates the public reading-list format, not the current folder editor or a guarantee that an ordinary saved article becomes public.

Use a public collection to help readers find worthwhile material, not to reproduce the example's collection of promotional profiles. Keep private articles out of the folder before you enable public access.

### Link behavior and SEO limits

In the inspected public list, the original article links were direct external anchors with `rel="noopener noreferrer"`, without `nofollow`, `ugc`, or `sponsored`. However, they appeared only in the JavaScript-rendered page, not in its fetched HTML. Instapaper's [robots.txt](https://www.instapaper.com/robots.txt) also disallows the `/p/` public reading-page route.

For those reasons, this guide does **not** classify Instapaper as a clean dofollow opportunity. A visible link and an absence of `nofollow` do not establish dependable crawlability or ranking value. Treat a public folder primarily as a resource-sharing and possible referral surface, and do not assume it will be indexed or discovered without sharing its URL.
