## OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is a community-maintained world map. A real physical business or other verifiable map feature can include its official website, creating a public nofollow link on the feature's data page.

- Link type: nofollow
- Free option: yes
- Backlink value: 3/100
- Spam score: 1/100
- Difficulty: 45/100
- Estimated time: 20 minutes
- Requirements: Free OpenStreetMap account, Verifiable physical location, Accurate business details, Official website

The legitimate route is to map a real, verifiable physical feature and add its official website as factual contact data. OpenStreetMap is not a general business directory: do not create an object only to gain a link, and do not add an online-only business or virtual location.

### Steps

1. Search [OpenStreetMap](https://www.openstreetmap.org/) for the exact business or feature and check whether it already exists. Update the existing object instead of creating a duplicate.
2. Sign in and open the [browser editor](https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit). Complete the built-in walkthrough if you have not edited the map before.
3. Place or select the feature at its precise real-world location, then choose the correct category and add objective details such as its name, address and opening hours.
4. Add the full official URL in the **Website** field. OpenStreetMap documents this as the [`website=*` tag](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:website); use the feature's own website, include `https://`, and never use a URL shortener.
5. Review the geometry and tags, then save with a short factual changeset comment that describes the map edit rather than promoting the business.
6. Revisit the public feature page and confirm that the website is correct. Respond if another mapper asks for clarification or a source.

The [Amai Bā example](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/9795586991) shows an official website on a public map-object page:

### Link quality and moderation

On the inspected example, OpenStreetMap outputs a direct external anchor with `rel="nofollow"`. A second sampled business object used the same attribute, so treat this as a local-data and referral-visibility opportunity rather than a clean dofollow backlink.

Read OpenStreetMap's [guidance for SEO mappers](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/About_OpenStreetMap_for_SEO_mappers) before editing. It specifically rejects online-only businesses, fabricated or inaccurate locations, duplicate objects, marketing copy and careless bulk edits. Accurate ground truth can improve the map; promotional edits can be reverted and accounts can attract scrutiny.
