SourceForge is useful only when you have a real open-source software project to publish or mirror. The backlink path is the project website/homepage link on the public SourceForge project page; it is visible to visitors, but inspected examples mark that external link as nofollow.

### Best method: create or import a real project

1. Start at [SourceForge's create page](https://sourceforge.net/create/) and choose **Create Your Project Now**. SourceForge also offers a GitHub import flow for projects that already live on GitHub.
2. Sign in or create a SourceForge account. The direct project creation URL (`/p/add_project`) is login-gated.
3. Add the project name, short summary, category, license, and other required metadata. Keep the listing focused on a real downloadable or hosted open-source project.
4. Add your external project website or documentation URL in the project website/homepage field when setting up the project details.
5. Publish enough files, code, documentation, or a repository import for the page to be useful. Do not create an empty SourceForge project just to hold a backlink.
6. Open the public project page and confirm the website button appears near the project summary.

### Link quality and expectations

The external website button is not a clean dofollow backlink. In raw HTML, sampled SourceForge project pages rendered the project website anchor with `rel="nofollow"`, including the KeePass example at `https://sourceforge.net/projects/keepass/`. Use this for product discovery, referral traffic, and project credibility rather than as a direct authority-passing link.

SourceForge is still worth considering for software teams because project pages can rank for project-name and download-related searches. It is a poor fit for agencies, local businesses, affiliate sites, or any project that cannot honestly be presented as open-source software.
